diabetes

Worried about your blood sugar levels? Are you a diabetic or prediabetic who is looking for natural solutions? Here is how Ayurveda works for the diabetic patients:

Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a high blood sugar level over a prolonged period of time. With the modern diagnostic methods, sugar levels and tendency towards diabetes are often seen during lab tests even before symptoms appear.

Prediabetes is when your blood sugar level is higher than it should be but not high enough for your doctor to diagnose diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes almost always have prediabetes first, but they don’t usually show any symptoms of diabetes.

Here are some initial signs of imbalance in diabetes or purvarupa of diabetes:

  • coating in oral cavity and white/yellowish coating on tongue and teeth
  • burning sensation in hands or feet
  • stickiness of body
  • excess depositions appear in body orifices
  • fatigue
  • thirst and dryness of throat, palate or skin
  • sweetness in mouth
  • feeling of heaviness in body

if you have these initial signs you can start a preventive approach, thus, you can prevent diabetes form manifesting as a disease.

The first question in your mind is: Is there any medicine for Diabetes in Ayurveda?

Yes, Ayurvedic Diabetes Treatment can effectively manage diabetes type- 2 through the right application of dietary changes, lifestyle modification, and plant-based medication.

Also, diabetes prevention can be done with proper ayurvedic guidance.

How Ayurvedic Diabetes Treatment works?

A diabetic patient needs support, encouragement and individual attention. Planning of relevant self-management strategies is needed along with motivating the patient, when they learn more about diabetes and themselves (constitution or body-type)they are open to the personal strategies and, accept and follow them. Other than that, counselling is needed to stay on track, learning auto-regulation and addressing fear and personal issues is also of significance.

The Treatment plan:

Avoidance of the causative factors is the first line of treatment. In Ayurveda, it is called nidana parivarjana. Whatever we consume through food, drink and activities leads to changes in our body’s functioning. When we talk in terms of concept of dosha in Ayurveda, it means that there is either an increase, a decrease or a vitiation in the doshas of the body. If the change is adaptable there won’t be any major health risk. But if we start to overuse a particular food, drink or over indulge in a particular activity, we will lead to vitiation in particular doshas. The dosha, when getting aggravated, vitiates the dushyas like medas, rakta, sukra, ambu, vasa, majja and mamsa and leads to prameha (diabetes).

The treatment plan consists of:

  • A food and nutrition plan (Ahara)
  • A lifestyle improvement plan (Vihara)
  • Plant-based medications (Phytotherapie)

Aahara-

The food which is predominant in the opposite qualities of the pathogenesis and disease, are advised with careful assessment. While choosing food, “what to eat” is important, but it’s combination with how (preparation) and when plays important roles when planning food and nutrition for diabetic patients.

Vihara-

Changes are to be made in the faulty lifestyle and faulty dietary habits and managing mental stress is important too. For example, a simple habit of daytime sleep should be changed. Reasons for over indulgence in a particular activity are to be found. A sedentary life style can be the causative factor for diabetes.

Plant Based medicines:

Aegle marmelos (bael), curcuma (haridra), Azadirakta indica (nimbapatra), Acacia arabica (babul), Eugenia jambolana (jambu), Allium sativum (lashun), Aloe vera (kumari), Tinospora cordifolia (guduchi), Phyllanthrus amarus (bhuiamala), Trigonella Foenum graecum (methi).

Apart from these, many other formulations are used to treat the diabetic condition.

Diabetes type-2 is one of the lifestyle disorders which needs proper treatment and care. If diagnosed in initial stages, it is easy to treat but if neglected, it can prove to be a long-term health problem. The ayurvedic approach is a holistic approach, thus treating the person as a whole and not just the sugar levels.
